Let me introduce myself, I’m Crabgrass Jr. Currently I’m just a tiny seed, but I have one goal this year…

That’s what I do!
It’s just who I am!
I’m not picky about which lawn. It’s fun to mess up the prettiest lawn on the block and it’s just as much fun to join friends in an average lawn and party all summer until it is the undisputed ugliest lawn in the neighborhood.
Wondering who invited me to party in your lawn this year?
Last fall, as the warm days of summer faded into the cold nights of winter, my parent’s season came to an end. That’s right, we are what people call an annual, we live only one season. But, before they said farewell, they literally gave birth to thousands of tiny crabgrass seeds.
I know what you are thinking, “My lawn is OK.
I didn’t have any of your family living in my lawn last year.”
And, you may be right.
Maybe they didn’t live in your lawn last summer. Maybe they lived next door. Or, maybe they lived down the street. Shoot, they could have spent last summer in a completely different neighborhood.
But, I’m in your lawn now!
How did I get in your lawn?
I could have arrived over the fall and winter after a fun day of sailing around in the Oklahoma wind.
Or, my sibilings and I could have hitched a ride on a lawn mower taking up stakes in a whole new area of town.
It really doesn’t matter how I got here. All that counts is that I’m in your lawn right now along with lots of family and friends just waiting for the temperatures to warm up and the party to start.
I really hope I have landed in a lawn that hasn’t had a protection blanket (a pre-emergent herbicide) spread across it.
Hopefully, I’m lying around in an unprotected lawn so that in the next few weeks as soil temperatures warm up, I and the rest of the gang will germinate – burst to life – and start partying all season long in your lawn.
And, just like a bunch of teenagers throwing a weekend party at an Airbnb, there will be an ugly mess when we are finished.
The crabgrass family is so thankful for homeowners who have no idea how easy it is to prevent a weed party in their lawn this season!
It’s so simple!
But they have no idea, so we just keep messing up their lawns.
All they need to do is put a pre-emergent herbicide on their lawn anytime between early January and early March followed up by a second application 6-8 weeks later.
But if they don’t, I will OWN their lawn this summer!
For now, I just hope I have landed in a lawn without pre-emergent protection!

The first signs of crabgrass every spring is in areas of bare soil.
Crabgrass is an aggressive annual grassy weed. A single seed that starts growing in March will be a large grassy weed by early July.
Without a spring pre-emergent your lawn will be more crabgrass than turfgrass by midsummer.
How aggressive is crabgrass? This is a picture from April 2022 of crabgrass 4 weeks after soul temperatures reached 55 degrees, the point that crabgrass starts to germinate.
